ReefTox is a closed-loop coral ecotoxicology laboratory in Brittany, France, running coral tests for marine and industrial programs. The standard marine ecotox panel covers invertebrates, algae, and fish, but rarely a coral endpoint, because no validated coral guideline yet existed. Acute coral protocols are now in a 13-laboratory pre-validation (Bao et al. 2024, Toxics), and we pair live coral husbandry with marine ecotox methods under one roof. Same closed-loop lab, same up-to-50-species panel, with protocols and concentration ranges adapted to marine use cases and reporting tuned to EU BPR PT21, IMO BWMS Code, VGP / VIDA, MARPOL Annex IV/VI, and OSPAR. Endpoints: EC50, LOEC, NOEC (acute), EC10, EC50, chronic PNEC (chronic). Acute tests report in 2 to 3 weeks; the chronic study runs 3 months plus a 1-month recovery.
Every colony we test is cultivated in our closed-loop lab, never taken from a reef, so the data that protects coral is not produced at coral's expense.

Coral as a complementary species
We slot coral into the marine ecotox panel you already run, acute + chronic on invertebrates, algae, fish, without displacing any of that work. You add the species the market couldn't previously source a defensible test for.
Coral-specific testing for reef-adjacent sites
For protected reef areas, private-island operations, or port-adjacent reef sites where a use case has direct coral exposure, we run the full coral panel as a stand-alone program tuned to your permit framework.

Antifouling Paints
EU BPR PT21 copper-biocide actives expire 30 June 2028. Add a coral endpoint to your product-authorisation dossier.
Ballast Water
IMO BWMS Code D-2 type approval. US VIDA / USCG implementing regulations due October 2026.
Scrubber Wash Water
OSPAR bans open-loop discharge from 1 July 2027 and closed-loop from 1 January 2029 in NE Atlantic ports.
Drilling Fluids
Permit-conditioned discharge for offshore platforms. Coral data for reef-adjacent operations.
Cruise Ships
On-board sunscreen, hull-cleaning effluent, on-shore wastewater, brine, pool, and laundry, each discharge tested to an acute EC50 or chronic EC10/PNEC endpoint.
Why marine engages now
The regulatory clock is dated. The 3-month chronic lead time is not.
A buyer who waits until coral is formally required cannot produce data inside their dossier cycle, because the chronic test takes three months. Start generating coral data ahead of the cycle, and the result is defensible by the time the dossier requires it.
Coral data enters your environmental risk assessment as an additional species PNEC in the PEC:PNEC weight of evidence. A competent authority can weigh a coral endpoint on the strength of the multi-lab pre-validation, even while a formal coral test guideline is still in development.
EU BPR PT21
Copper-biocide actives (copper oxide, copper thiocyanate, copper pyrithione, zineb) approved only to 30 June 2028. The renewal evaluation runs ahead of that date.
OSPAR scrubber decision
Open-loop EGCS discharge banned in NE Atlantic ports from 1 July 2027; closed-loop from 1 January 2029.
US VIDA
USCG implementing regulations under the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act due October 2026.
EU ETS maritime
100% maritime coverage from January 2026, methane and NāO included. Compliance scrutiny on every EU-touching voyage.
IMO BWMS Code
D-2 land-based and shipboard testing required for ballast-water treatment system type approval.
