ReefTox 3, acute across hard and soft corals
Acute coral ecotoxicity test of a complete cosmetic formulation on a 3-species panel: hard SPS (Montipora digitata and Acropora sp.) and soft coral (Xenia sp.), representative of the morphological diversity of reef ecosystems.
What is ReefTox 3?
ReefTox 3 is an acute coral ecotoxicity test of a complete cosmetic formulation on a 3-species panel spanning hard SPS (Montipora digitata and Acropora sp.) and soft coral (Xenia sp.). It runs 96 hours of contact at a single 50 mg/l concentration, with 6 replicates and 6 blanks per species, documenting observational acute endpoints for each species: bleaching (computer-assisted), tissue loss, necrosis, mortality, morphological and behavioural anomalies, and before/after photography. Because it uses a single concentration, it does not produce EC50, LOEC or NOEC. ReefTox 3 delivers defensible, publishable coral ecotox results, and every engagement begins with the free predictive pre-evaluation.

Why test 3 coral species instead of 1?
A formulation safe for one coral species may affect another differently. Three species spanning hard SPS and soft groups give a more representative view of how the formulation behaves on the actual diversity of reef ecosystems.
Who ReefTox 3 is for
- • Brands seeking defensible, publishable coral ecotox data with deep cross-morphology acute coverage.
- • Regulatory affairs teams preparing dossiers across multiple jurisdictions where reviewers expect data on more than one coral morphology.
- • Brands needing documented observational acute endpoints at the species level (bleaching, tissue loss, necrosis, mortality).
Part of a full acute + chronic program
ReefTox 3 is live-coral testing documented in a defensible coral ecotox report. It combines with ReefTox 50 and the optional 3-month chronic program (Reef Chronic 1) for a full acute + chronic engagement.

Why test 3 coral species instead of 1?
A formulation safe for one coral species can affect another differently. A panel spanning hard SPS and soft corals gives a more representative view across the morphological diversity of reef ecosystems, the kind of multi-morphology evidence regulatory reviewers increasingly expect.
How does ReefTox 3 fit into a full testing program?
